The seminar will be staged at SCAD Atlanta on Sunday, October 30 from 10am-4pm.

The in-depth class offers aspiring producers (and interested writers, directors and actors) a 6-hour practical seminar on producing the independent film in 2011 and beyond. Mr. Harris will take attendees through the steps of making a picture: selecting material, developing the screenplay, assembling the creative team, approaching talent, creating a business plan, raising financing, pre-production, production, post-production, marketing and distribution. He will also discuss strategies and realities for producing a film outside Hollywood.

Mr. Harris executive produced THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, produced the critically acclaimed Sundance entry BOTTLE SHOCK, THE FAMILY TREE, MISS NOBODY and the recently wrapped CROOKED ARROWS.
“The Indie Producing Seminar is great! Todd maps out the road to producing an independent film drawing from his own experience producing over thirty features. A concise primer on indie production and more than a little entertaining”
-Paul Yeuell, Screenwriter, Script Coordinator DAMAGES (Sony Pictures Entertainment, DirectTV)

TWIST ON JAPANESE FAIRYTALE WITH SILENT FILM EVENT:

Atlanta Indie Filmmaker Milford Thomas’ CLAIRE is loosely based on the ancient Japanese fable “Kaguyahime.” This version tells the story of a charming elderly male couple in the rural 1920s South (Short Mountain Radical Faeries JIM FERGUSON and MISH P. DeLIGHT) that find an enchanting girl from the moon on their farm (Blast-Off Burlesque’s TONIET GALLEGO) and adopt her as their own.

“An uncompromising work of art.” – American Cinematographer

CLAIRE is 53-minutes, silent, and black-and-white, shot on an antique hand-crank 35mm Mitchell Standard camera (same model used by silent great Mary Pickford) in Atlanta and other locations throughout Georgia, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina.

“CLAIRE is a rare treasure, an ancient legend told in an archaic, low-tech way that somehow enchants us far more than Spider-Man or any other multi-million-dollar CGI marvel.” – East Bay Express

The film toured internationally as special opening event for film festivals in Milan, Brussels, and Montreal, always accompanied by the “Orchestra de Lune,” a live 11-piece chamber orchestra performing an original score by composer-conductor Anne Richardson.

CLAIRE was awarded “Special Jury Mention” for first feature at the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and is the first non-vintage feature to screen at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.

“…Utterly charming, even poignant viewing experience.” - Variety Magazine

This screening with the live “ORCHESTRA de LUNE” at the Woodruff Arts Center is a special 10th anniversary celebration reunion with the filmmaker and much of the cast and crew in attendance. Legendary cast member Mish P. DeLight is a charter member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, San Francisco, and will be on hand with Sisters from the Atlanta chapter to greet moviegoers.

Funds from the event will allow composer Richardson to write an alternate score for string quartet, thus enabling the more economical and mobile version to reach a wider audience beginning in 2012.

“CLAIRE has magic and wonder to spare.” – San Francisco Examiner

Composer Anne Richardson received a Degree in Music from Oberlin University and a Masters in Composition from the San Francisco Conservatory. She currently lives in Washington DC with her wife.

Atlanta-based Writer / Director Milford Thomas is a 2006 Sundance Director and Producer’s Lab Fellow, and the recipient of a 2006 Annenberg Fellowship.
The following is an exerpt from an article published in the October/November issue of Oz Magazine about the many post-production facilities in Georgia. This article also provides a comprehensive list of all the post-facilities in Georgia.
See the Issuu/flipbook version of the article below.

Georgia’s entertainment tax credits have been a boon to the production economy, but post production professionals report
mixed results.

Georgia’s film and television production activities have drawn plenty of attention as the state’s generous 30% tax credit has drawn major entertainment projects to the area – producing a $1.4 billion economic impact last year.

However, location filming is only part of the story. Post production houses – which offer editing, mixing, color corrections and similar services after the raw shoot – are also a vital part of Georgia’s
entertainment industry. Post houses are a vital part of the infrastructure that draws moviemakers and TV producers to Georgia, offering talent and technology that brings production dreams to reality after the cameras stop rolling.

Georgia is home to 37 post houses, ranging from nationally known outfits like Crawford Media Services and Turner Studios to boutique shops like EditLab. While the Peach State’s post facilities are not as well known as its film locations, the growing entertainment industry is providing more and more opportunities for local editors and artists to prove they can hold their own against the best across the nation.

Lucrative tax credit attracts record number of TV series and feature films

ATLANTA, June 3, 2011— Georgia will be seen by millions today as movie-goers head to theatres for the premiere of “X-Men: First Class.” The film was shot on Jekyll Island and other spots along Georgia’s Coast in late 2010. This is the first of many Georgia-filmed movies slated to hit theatres in the next few months, including “The Change-Up” starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman on August 5; “Wanderlust” starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd on October 7; and a remake of “Footloose” will hit theatres on October 14.

Georgia can also be seen on television sets across the world with multiple television series now calling Georgia home. On May 30, VH1’s first hour-long scripted series “Single Ladies” premiered; “Teen Wolf” will make its debut on MTV on June 5; and the third season of “Drop Dead Diva” will air on Lifetime on June 19. AMC’s record-breaking “The Walking Dead,” CW’s “Vampire Diaries,” The Discovery Channel’s popular “Auction Kings” and BET’s “The Game” have also set up shop here.

The 2008 Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act helped the state’s entertainment industry achieve record numbers. Georgia is now among the top five states in the nation for film and TV production with more than 274 productions shot in Georgia from July 2010 through April 2011, bringing in more than $589.2 million in investment to Georgia. These projects have generated an economic impact of $2.1 billion.

The Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act provides an income tax credit of 20 percent to qualified productions, and an additional 10 percent tax credit to productions that embed a Georgia promotional logo in the titles or credits, or as product placement within the content of the production. The tax credits may be awarded not only to traditional feature films, television series, commercials and music videos, but also to innovative new industries such as video game development and animation.

Additional Georgia-filmed movies that have had box office success in recent months include “Fast Five,” “Water for Elephants,” Robert Redford’s “The Conspirator,” Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” “Get Low,” and “Due Date.”

www.georgia.org

——-
