The 86th Academy Awards
On March 2, the 2014 Academy Awards took place. Hosted by comedian Ellen Degeneres, this year’s Oscars were unlike any other. Ellen ordered pizza to be delivered to members of the audience during the awards show and spotlighted her sense of humor throughout the Awards. Musical performances during the Awards included nominees such as Happy from Despicable Me 2 performed by Pharrell Williams, Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom performed by U2, The Moon Song from Her performed by Karen O, and the winner for Original Song Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen performed by Idina Menzel.
Other musical performances included P!nk singing Somwhere Over the Rainbow as part of a tribute to The Wizard of Oz and Bette Midler’s performance of Wind Beneath My Wings in honor of late actors, writers, and others in the filmmaking industry. Of course, along with the performances and comedic interludes, there are also the awards themselves! Feature film Gravity and its crew took home seven awards, the most out of any film nominated this year. However, “12 Years A Slave” also won several awards, including Best Picture. Director Jean-Marc Vallee’s Dallas Buyer’s Club took home four awards, and Disney’s animated film Frozen won two.
